Amethyst is a purple quartz variety, and is found all over the world. Most amethyst geodes are mined in Brazil, however amethyst can be found all over the states. It is the birthstone for February. The purple color is attributed to natural irradiation while it is growing in the earth, and from iron impurities found with the quartz. Amethyst is associated with spiritual protection and purification, and is useful for stimulating the third eye and crown chakras.
